New Haven, a place to realize the American dream as long as you're anything other than a white guy.

New Haven, Connecticut whose slogan is 'It all happens here' hits a home run with that one. New Haven, founded in 1638 is home to Yale University, had the first public tree planting program in America and is known as the Elm City, in 1784 Roger Sherman one of the signers of the Constitution was elected the city's first mayor. Why, New Haven is the Birthplace of our illustrious former President George W. Bush, what a history. But what stands out most about New Haven is that it is probably the worst city in this great country for a white guy to try to attain the American Dream.

New Haven is the home of a group of white firefighters who took the local test for promotion and then were denied by city officials because none of the blacks that took the test passed, discrimination at it's best. Their logic was that the black firefighters would file suit if they promoted the white firefighters regardless of the fact that they didn't pass the test for promotion. The white firefighters decided not to take the slight laying down as most white guys do in America today and sued. The local court, as I call them, ruled against the firefighters and the case went on the the appeals court where none other than Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor sat on the bench, and low and behold the fair minded interpreter of the law also, ruled against the firefighters. The case went to the Supreme Court and Justice was finally served, the White firefighters won, they can get their promotions. Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg the most liberal of our Supreme Court Justices was one of the dissenting judges, and since she is white and has some kind of liberal guilt thing working for her wrote in her brief that New Haven had not engaged in illegal discrimination and that the firefighters had no vested right to promotion other than they had met ALL of the requirements set by the city, a typical decision from a lawyer who's background consists of working for the ACLU and academia.

What has come from all of this is a look into how the system works, how discrimination against white males has been legislated and is rampant across the country. Testing is modified to make it easier for minorities to pass, laws based on flawed logic are in place in municipalities across the country that essentially punish whites who apply themselves in an attempt to succeed. Sadly, these laws don't not help the minorities they are written for, what does move all Americans towards equality is a level playing field. Why not let all applicants for all positions know what is expected of them and if they apply themselves, work hard and study hard they will have real equal opportunity. This legislated nonsense just isn't working.
