To hear the media and our elected officials one would think that this mess in Egypt crept up on the world in a most stealthy fashion. The media from the left to the right are all doing their unholy best to make it look as though we, The United States, had nothing to do with this catastrophe when in fact we had an opportunity to make real headway in the Muslim world over the last thirty years. But, as the casual observer can readily make out from his or her couch that was not destined to happen, we rode with the wrong horse by failing miserably to influence the leadership in Egypt to take the right path dating back to the time, the soon to be former strong man and his cronies, took control of the country.
Our politicians from the local level to the highest office in the land have performed their usual cheesy nationally televised stage act by turning on the soon to be ousted despot, in this case Mubarak, and denouncing his sometimes brutal regime saying 'it's time to go' he's a bad leader and in the process use the excuse that we told him time and again that he needed to be more sensitive to the needs of his countrymen. What the politicians fail to tell us when they are running off at the mouth on every available media outlet is that we dumped billions every year into Egypt and only had to use the proverbial stick and carrot to make Mubarak and his guys tow the line, just a little, we held the purse strings what's wrong with this picture.
We kept this crook in power by training and equipping his Army, giving aid for public works projects, education and whatever else. One can only guess how much other training and aid we duked this douche bag to build a stable nation. So what is the prognosis for Egypt, no really good no matter what the outcome. We have the Muslim Brotherhood, the most well organized protest and 'political' group in the country, which is a terrorist organization dedicated to creating a Theocracy in the same vein as Iran. There are some fragmented groups of educated, some more fragmented groups of uneducated and basically ignorant that will be led down the path by the highly sophisticated Muslim brotherhood and the smallest group, the Christians, who will be slaughtered systematically if the fundamentalists grab control. Then there is the military who hopefully will grab temporary control and set up elections blocking the 'brotherhood' and their ilk in a similar manner to Algeria.
Whatever happens it's about time that the American people demand that out 'elected' become students of HISTORY, spend less time in the capitol bar getting drunk and trying to pork their male and female pages and maybe disasters like this can be avoided in the future.
