This past weekend the long seated and venerable Senator John Warner of Virginia, suggested going back to the infamous 55 mile per hour national speed limit. It appears the good Senator is not only showing his age but his complete lack of touch with the economic situation in America, both at the time it was originally thought up during an Oval Office circle j _ _ k in 1973 and more importantly today. Senator Warner was involved in government service at the time the original mess took place, when imposed by Richard Nixon for the purpose of saving gas and lives, a great social experiment, that failed miserably to either save gas or lives and only succeeded in p _ _ _ing off the American public to no end. I will never cease to be amazed at how out of touch politician become when they plant themselves within the borders of Washing DC. Maybe it's the water or possibly the lack of in their drinks, somehow they manage to come up with ways to screw the very people who elect them to office.
I may be a little off on the follow stats but I think correct for the most part. First, there is no fuel shortage, we can get whatever we need for a price. There are two very large emerging economies out there by the name of China and India and they are buying up all of the oil the can to fuel their incredible growth. This drives up the price of oil since, our good friends, the Saudis (not really our friends at all) only pump so much per day. Secondly, the speculators have been allowed to run wild with this whole oil thing driving up the price of gasoline. Third, the oil companies are making a fortune on this whole mess and they could give a s _ _ t less about the American public. There are more reasons and I could go on forever, the Chinese boasting they will buy every drop of oil they can get etc...etc...but it's not worth the write.
Now, there are some answers and some of the obvious being sported today are good and some are just plain stupid. Battery power for cars, an interesting thought if you don't have far to go and live in a warm of temperate climate year round where you never use accessories like heat, defrosters and air-conditioning in your car. Although there is a place for battery power maybe in short haul situations in large metros. Another is the Hy Bred, save a little in urban settings with gas and battery but is expensive and if pressed the auto manufacturers will tell you it's only a temporary fix, besides Hy Bred vehicles don't really get any better mileage on the highway than their non Hy Bred counterparts. Then we have the rest, Hydrogen, solar, bio diesel etc...etc...and on and on and on.
What we actually need are drive systems that use less fuel. face it folks, we are going to need oil well into the future, probably beyond the time when anyone reading this blog will be here in body. Senator McCain proposed a three hundred million dollar prize for the battery that could drive all cars indefinitely, nice publicity stunt John boy, but it ain't gonna happen any time soon.
The lazy a_ _ auto companies, who by the way are finally getting what they have coming in the form of no sales should have been working on this one for years, it's called social conscience and more importantly from a sound business standpoint, good planning, unfortunately they don't have the words in their corporate vocabulary. They have employed a strategy of neglect the consumer, bottom line only b _ _ _ s _ _ t voodoo business planning, are now despised by their customer base, and are paying the price in lost sales and market value.
What we really need to do at the same time is drill, yes drill and drill and drill, right here in the good old USA and it's surrounding waters. Develop the oil shale sands here and in Canada, our closest neighbor. Drilling can actually be accomplished with causing massive environmental destruction and the benefit will only be positive for the American public that needs the oil. Green is good, stupid is bad and we have stupid politicians in Washington who refuse to look at the situation clearly. Which brings me back to the good and venerable Senator Warner, his cronies in Washington and what should be done to get the process moving.
Go out on election day and vote. Vote for someone who is actually promising to make things better, not promising change and then not defining what that change is and then giving us all more of the same we have been subjected to for the last eight years. And this little diatribe doesn't just apply to the top job, it applies to everyone, from the president down to local low level elected officials. If they stink, send them packing. If they are pushing stupid agendas, like 55 mile per hour speed limits, vote to old buzzards out of office, since they have only their personal interest at heart. Remember America, the easiest way to get politicians working on our behalf is to strike fear into their hearts through the ballot box. The trick here is this, if a politician does not do what he or she promises, vote the goof out of office on their next election cycle and move on to another candidate until finally some descent people are in office. Party affiliation isn't as important as results and we Americans as a group are the only ones who suffer when we continue to elect bad people.
