This past weekend I had a first in a lifetime experience that I will not soon forget. I was asked , along with my wife to go and pack food products that would be shipped to starving children in Africa, well actually my wife was asked and she accepted for both of us. I am not adverse to this type activity and in fact welcome the opportunity to be of service in this way. We arrived, and were put through a short orientation about who is supposed to get the food, why the type of food is packed and the general conditions that these people live under. First of all, the food we packed was made up of one cup of rice, one cup of soy meal, a quarter cup of dried vegetables and a quarter cup of vegetable chicken powder and vitamins mixed. The food is destined for starving children on the African continent this batch specifically for Zimbabwe formerly Rhodesia and now run by the scum of all scums, that Marxist wannabe, Robert Mugabe and his beyond corrupt government that have driven his country beyond the depths of poverty and chaos. Uganda is the other country to be earmarked for the food, and though not the model of progress and democracy that it should be, is heads above it's continental neighbor to the south Zimbabwe. Anyway, we were to work a two hour shift packing and sealing plastic bags and loading pallets with the rice mix. We were told that there were six portions in each bag and that one meal per day would probably be the best each child would get. That most were at the level of starvation and that his particular mix was something one who is starving can hold down and digest. That a child could effectively come back from near death if fed this mixture daily for a period of about sixty to ninety days. This was done through a church called Willow Creek in the Chicago suburbs. I won't comment on Willow Creek as I am not a member and do not plan to join other than to say this is a part of what organized religion is supposed to be about and that I now hold Willow Creek and it's members in relatively high esteem for being involved with the organizations that attempt to get aid to the most needy in the world.
While packing the food my mind started to wander as the work was quite monotonous even though we were moving quickly to pack as much as possible in our two hour window of opportunity. I began to think to myself, would all of this food make it to those it was intended for, why are so many children starving to death in many different African nations and the public is barely informed of this on going most gruesome of catastrophes. Then it came to me, they have no strategic importance to us. I got on with my work and finished my two hours. When we were through we were told that our group had packed one hundred seventy six cases of thirty six meal bags per case and that we had packed enough food to feed one hundred children for one year. That the Food For Children people hoped most of the food would make it to the intended, I was outraged. I immediately thought of the countries the food was going to and understood immediately what they meant by hoping most of the food would make it. Zimbabwe is probably the worst, as they will take the food or at least a large portion and more than likely hand it out to the military and those connected to the corrupt government of Robert Mugabe. Mr. Mugabe, in case you don't know or may have forgotten is the leader of the country formerly known as Rhodesia, an agricultural and manufacturing colony of England that may not have been model for democracy and fair treatment, but in hind sight was far better than what was to come. Which brings me to today's point.
Unless a country has some strategic importance to some larger more powerful nation, it is left to swing in the proverbial breeze. No one in government seems to care what happens to the inhabitants and in fact go out of their way not to comment on even the most barbaric situations, Darfur and the Sudan are good examples of this lack of interest. Zimbabwe goes unnoticed to most as well as many other lesser known countries for the same reason. I think I have the answer, but I will surely be condemned for this opinion by the right and left. These countries can be saved and brought into the twenty first century as democratic, productive and independent nations with infrastructure (they have none now) and stability. It can only be brought about by a world effort and the violent overthrow of their existing governments. And by that I mean World War II obliteration. Destroy their ability to make war on outside nations and more importantly their own people. Put Marshall Plan like governments and administrators in place with ten, twenty or thirty years plans that are legally in place worldwide and have turn over dates when real independence takes place. During that time period infrastructure could be put into place, job training initiated, schools built and an agricultural system put in place to feed the populace. A sustainable economy could easily be effected. And I would bet that this could be done for much less than the current round of wars we as a nation continually support. The only downside is the initial eradication of the scum that currently dish out misery on a scale most cannot fathom, and in reality that means no downside. This may not sound like a noble intention at first to many on the left and those who have opted to have their testicles politically removed but it is far more humane and would put an end to what appears to be perpetual suffering at the hands of a few. Negotiating over a table with the despots on the continent of Africa is a waste of time and only prolongs the misery that will continue on for many lifetimes if something is not done.
